Girls Lacrosse Super Team

Girls Lax Super Team -Standard Times

Shelby Hickox, Dartmouth

Junior, Attack

Hickox scored 31 goals and assisted on eight more. Already a dangerous scorer as a sophomore, Hickox improved defensively her junior season and picked up face-off duties due to her superb stick-control. "Shelby picks ball up with one hand," Dartmouth coach Laura Magno said. "If anyone else did it I would yell at them, but she does it so beautifully I don't really say anything."

Kaitlin Rita, Dartmouth

Senior Midfield

After three seasons with the defense, Rita stepped into the midfield as a defensive wing. She balanced defensive assignments with pressing the attack, scoring 13 goals and assisting on another six. "If we had to mark someone man-to-man all over the field, Kaitlin was the one we would put on her," Dartmouth coach Laura Magno said. "She's a great overall player, but also a great defensive player."

Maggie Schoening, Dartmouth

Senior Midfield

The Indians' team leader never left the field this spring. Schoening's 45 points - on 30 goals and 15 assists - ranks second for Dartmouth. Plans to play lacrosse at Bentley College. "Maggie picks up the game and spacing so well," Indians coach Laura Magno said. She's sees the field on offense and creates opportunities for other people, and on defense she anticipates passes. She's able to sit back in the zone and make plays."

SECOND TEAM

Jenna Custodio Dartmouth Senior Attack

Lacrosse Article

GIRLS LACROSSE

DARTMOUTH 13, FALMOUTH 6

Maggie Schoening scored four goals, while Jenna Custodio had three goals and two assists, as the Indians outscored Falmouth 8-1 in the second half and raised their season record to 6-10.

"Our defense shut them down. Alyssa Arruda shut down their top scorer," said Dartmouth coach Laura Magno. "They scored 15 goals on us last time. (Our) passing was beautiful, but it all started with defense causing turnovers."

Dartmouth also got two goals each from Cassie Benoit and Hanna Bogen.

The Indians host Martha's Vineyard today at 3:30 p.m.

GET TO KNOW: Kaitlyn Rita

Southcoast Times did an article on senior, co-captain Kaitlyn Rita. Check it out!

GET TO KNOW: Kaitlyn Rita

School: Dartmouth

Year: Senior

Sport: Lacrosse

Position: Defensive wing

Noteworthy: Rita, a senior at Dartmouth High School, is a three-sport athlete and captain of the girls soccer, basketball, and lacrosse teams. She plans on studying Environmental Conservation Sciences at the University of New Hampshire next fall.

When did you take up lacrosse?

I never played lacrosse in my life before freshman year. A lot of my friends played. They all did the camps when they were younger. They loved it and told me I should tryout. I had never played, but they said I'd catch on easily.

What does a defensive wing do?

There can only be seven people on one side of the restraining line at once, so as a d-wing you're always back there. On offense, one defensive player can go up, so either d-wing or a defender goes and helps out there. It's a lot of running, but I manage.

What is it like being a captain?

It was weird in the beginning because you've always had captains before you, and you'd see how they'd run things. The most important thing in being a captain is keeping your team morale up, keeping things together. We just try to have as much fun as possible, don't let anyone get down on themselves, or worry about anything. We like to have fun.

Do you have a prom dress yet?

I have one in mind, but I haven't gotten around to ordering and getting it yet. I've got to do that soon. I found it online and had to research where it was sold, so I have to go to a store in either Fall River or New Bedford and order it from them. I'm excited I can't wait.

On the Fly

Favorite Musical Artist(s): O.A.R., Jack Johnson, Dispatch and Dave Matthews

Favorite Concert Attended: O.A.R, Dispatch or Elton John

Favorite Sporting Event Attended: New England Revolution with my spring soccer team. We had box seats and got to go down on the field with the players after the game.

Favorite Movie: The Goonies

Favorite TV Show: Grey's Anatomy

Favorite Pro Team: Patriots

Most Memorable Moment in Sports: Playing spring soccer I went up for a header against New Bedford and got this enormous black eye. I had it for about two weeks.

Biggest fear: Not being happy when I get older

Person living or dead you'd most like to meet: Eleanor Roosevelt

Place you'd most like to visit: Ireland or France

Jersey number: 19 for lacrosse, 10 for basketball and 7 for soccer.

Favorite subject: English or history

Myspace or Facebook: Facebook

Sport that you don't play but would like to try: Hockey. It's a brutal sport. It would be so much fun, even though I can't skate at all.

Favorite Book: Harry Potter, and A Million Little Pieces

If your entire team was on Survivor, who wins?: Maggie Shoening. Maggie and I are very competitive people and she will do anything to win. She always works so hard at everything she does and she is also very smart so she'd have a good strategy.

How about American Idol?: Erica Baptiste. She has a good voice.

— Ryan Trepanier

Southcoast Preview

Dartmouth Indians

Coach: Laura Magno

(Second year)

2007 record: 8-11-0

Key returners: Sr. Mid. Maggie Schoening, Sr. Def. Kaitlyn Rita, Sr. Atk. Jenna Custodio, Sr. Def. Erica Baptisie, Sr. Atk. Olivia McGlone, Sr. Atk. Lauren Sagar, Sr. Def. Alyssa Arruda, Sr. Def. Sarah Gill, Jr. Mid. Shelby Hickox, Jr. Atk. Carissa Wills-DeMello, Jr. Mid. Hannah Bogen.

Key newcomers: Jr. Atk .Cathy Benoit, Jr. Def. Janna Skinner, Soph. G. Katie Zuber

Outlook: After graduating almost the entire team in 2006, the Indians started over last season, and with 11 varsity players returning, including leading scorer Schoening, they look to pick up right where they left off. Rita captains a cohesive defense that features five seniors, and will give new goalie Zuber a chance to learn on the job. Schoening managed 35 goals last year after missing the first few weeks with a broken wrist, she'll center a midfield full of dangerous juniors like Hickox and Bogen. Custodio, McGlone and Wills-DeMello look to do the damage up front.

Expectations 2008

Program Philosophy: High school lacrosse, although evolving, is a sport of raw athletic ability and desire. Due to the fact that many kids in the northeast have not been exposed to the sport at an early age via competitive youth programs, historically the players who have excelled at the high school level have done so because of sheer athleticism. When players pick up sticks for the first time, they still have a good a chance as anyone who might have played in the youth program for 2 and 3 years. Every player will receive an equal opportunity to make a spot within the program. This is a sport talented athletes can excel in. Regardless of existing skill level, the Dartmouth Lacrosse staff will work to improve all players on all levels.

o IF YOU HAVE A PHYSICAL WITH AN OUTSIDE DOCTOR, you must bring a doctor’s note that approves you for athletics; bring this to Mrs. Collins by FRIDAY, MARCH 14th.

o If you had a physical for a Fall or Winter sport, that physical is good for this school year.

o If you had a physical before JULY 1st, 2007, then you need a physical for this school year.

o If you need to have a physical done here at the school, please sign up with Mrs. Collins.

d. Be prepared with warm and cold clothing, rain attire, sticks, mouthpiece, goggles, and footwear.

e. While we would like to keep all players, roster sizes are limited. The team size depends on multiple factors including how many tryout, so please do not ask how many will be on either varsity of JV. The teams will consist of dedicated athletes committed to working hard to improve individually skills and team skills.

Expectations for players – DHS lacrosse players will show utmost effort to improve and to take strides to be a good teammate and positive contributor to DHS and the community. We expect you attend every practice, game and team meeting and be there on time. We expect you to improve as an individual each and every day, while working to make the team better. We expect that you maintain yourself in good standing at DHS. Our dedicated coaching staff will help you improve as a player and a person.

Expectations for coaches – DHS coaching staff will work to foster individual and team growth in terms of individual skills, team offense and defense, strength, and conditioning everyday. Staff will be on time to every game, practice, and meeting. Coaches will help student-athletes to grow as lacrosse players, athletes, and responsible representatives of DHS.

Regular Season Practices: Practices will be held according the schedule provided. All practices will be held behind Quinn Elementary School from 2:45pm-4:45pm, unless otherwise stated. Athletes should look for the whiteboard outside the main DHS office for announcements regarding rescheduled practices due to inclement weather.

Schedule: Please consult the provided schedule and calendar for practices, games, and other important events.

April Vacation – Students who choose to participate on any DHS lacrosse team will be expected to attend all games and practices. With at least two games scheduled over break, if you wish to go away on April vacation you should not choose to be part of the DHS lacrosse program. Only school sanctioned events, like New Orleans Habitat for Humanity, are allowed –HOWEVER players will not only miss those vacation games but must be worked back into the playing rotation at the coaches’ discretion.

Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket Games – Players must be academically eligible to attend these away games if they are scheduled during the school day. If a student-athlete is failing any one of her courses at the time of the game, she will not be granted permission to attend the game.

Full Disclosure Agreement – Concerns – Players come see the coach. Problems are best solved between the player and coach, not parent and coach. If a problem arises, all athletes are encouraged to approach the coach after practice/game. Often things are misinterpreted and communication can help. Coaches will not entertain a conversation with parent until the player discusses the situation with the coach first. If the problem is not resolved, the coach may entertain a meeting with the parent. However, the player must be present. A meeting request will be denied unless the player plans on attending. If a parent attempts to contact a coach, the coach is obligated under the full disclosure agreement to disseminate all dialogue exchanged by the coach and player. Parents should adhere to the proper guidelines.

Parental Support: Your daughters are quite appreciative of your support. Please continue to support from the sidelines. Please adhere to the MIAA rule on taunting that suggests that all spectators must act appropriately on the sidelines. Please cheer for the players and refrain from making negative comments towards players of your daughter’s team, opposing players, or officials. Although competition brings out aggressive behavior in people, inappropriate and or inappropriate behavior from spectators will not be tolerated. Where we encourage sportsmanship among our players and coaches, we hold our spectators to the same standards.

Directions to the home field and away games can be found on the DHS Athletics webpage: http://www.dartmouth.k12.ma.us/dhs/athletics/index.html
